Trust
For UAE companies retiring BitLocker-encrypted laptops, encryption helps protect stored data but is not by itself a complete ITAD handover record. Inventory each asset and drive, choose an approved sanitisation or destruction method, verify outcomes, and document custody. Release Windows Autopilot and other management enrolments before resale, and agree evidence and settlement requirements with the provider.
Corporate laptops often leave a business with BitLocker enabled, an Intune record still present and sensitive files stored on internal SSDs. Treating a factory reset or an encryption-status screenshot as the whole disposal process creates audit gaps. This guide separates confidentiality protection, ownership release, sanitisation evidence and commercial buyback so a UAE IT or procurement team can specify the work before any asset leaves the premises.
Microsoft describes BitLocker as volume encryption designed to reduce exposure from lost, stolen or improperly decommissioned devices. It uses encryption keys and protectors that may be linked to a TPM, PIN or recovery key. A drive showing BitLocker enabled is evidence of an encryption configuration, not a complete record of when data was rendered inaccessible, who handled the device or whether all storage media were covered.
Before collection, identify every internal SSD, removable drive and storage-bearing accessory. Record whether the system boots, whether encryption status can be checked and whether recovery information is held by the authorised organisation. Do not send recovery keys in an ordinary asset-valuation spreadsheet or disclose them to an unverified party.
A corporate buyer can discuss the planned disposition through Rekart's corporate device buyback and ITAD enquiry. The exact methods, evidence and commercial terms should be agreed in a written statement of work.
A useful asset register has the company's asset tag, manufacturer serial, model, department, storage device identifiers where accessible, encryption state, physical condition and intended destination. It should distinguish a laptop with a removable SSD from a soldered-storage device and mark non-booting machines as exceptions rather than silently assigning them a successful wipe status.
When an asset changes hands, record the date, time, location, responsible people, count, packaging or seal references and any discrepancies. A chain-of-custody receipt should reconcile to the original manifest. If 50 laptops leave the office and 49 are recorded at intake, investigate the missing unit before closing the project.
Do not publish sensitive serial lists or staff names in a public blog or general-purpose sharing link. Use an approved channel and limit access to those who need the data for collection and audit.
NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2, published in September 2025, focuses on a media-sanitisation program that considers information sensitivity, methods, verification and trust in implementation. It is guidance, not a NIST-issued vendor certification. The appropriate approach can differ for a reusable encrypted SSD, a damaged drive and media that must be destroyed under policy.
A business should specify its required outcome, approved method, verification, validation and evidence before accepting a vendor quote. Encryption may support certain cryptographic-erase approaches only when their prerequisites and key-handling requirements are met; merely deleting a file or removing a key reference is not universally sufficient.
For a formal service enquiry, see Rekart's IT asset disposition page, but independently verify any certification claims and obtain a written, technically specific scope. Do not treat website marketing wording as proof of an accreditation.
Windows Reset this PC can prepare an operating system for reuse, but an ordinary reset result is not automatically a sanitisation certificate. Similarly, a locked BitLocker screen indicates a protection state, not that all data-bearing components were disposed of according to policy. Ask for device- or media-level records with method, date, result, operator and exception handling.
If a laptop cannot boot, the supplier should not mark it as successfully wiped merely because the drive cannot be accessed. The plan may call for a compatible off-device procedure or physical destruction, depending on the medium and the organisation's approved policy. Reconcile destroyed media identifiers to the original asset list.
NIST's current SP 800-88 Revision 2 is the primary reference for designing a defensible program; do not cite withdrawn Revision 1 as the current version.
Microsoft instructs organisations to deregister Windows Autopilot devices when they permanently leave the organisation. The process can involve Intune and related records; deleting objects in the wrong order can cause complications. A Windows reset does not guarantee that a new owner can set up the laptop without the former company's enrolment prompt.
Before valuation, have the authorised IT team identify the relevant tenant and release process. Test a sample machine through first-run setup using a safe, approved procedure. Do not disclose corporate administrator credentials or recovery keys to a reseller as a shortcut.
For mixed fleets, apply equivalent ownership-release checks to Apple devices and any other managed platform. Data sanitisation and cloud management release are separate acceptance criteria; a device can pass one and fail the other.
Ask bidders for an itemised scope: quantity, device types, onsite or offsite handling, chain-of-custody steps, data treatment by media type, verification, exceptions, return or destruction decisions, reporting format, liability boundaries and settlement method. Request a sample certificate and a sample reconciliation sheet, with sensitive information redacted.
Keep commercial valuation separate from security acceptance. A high buyback offer is not sufficient if the data-handling method or evidence does not meet company policy. Likewise, a destruction-only quote should explain whether reusable non-data components can be recovered and how the final disposition is documented.
At closeout, reconcile collected assets, sanitised or destroyed media, rejected items, returned assets and paid units. Finance should be able to trace the final settlement to the approved manifest and exceptions.
BitLocker reduces the risk of unauthorised access, but it does not by itself document a complete ITAD process. Define an approved sanitisation or destruction outcome and keep verification and custody evidence.
Deleting a recovery-key record is not universally equivalent to a verified cryptographic erase. The effectiveness depends on the encryption design, all available key copies and the approved sanitisation procedure.
No. A Windows reset is an operating-system workflow, not a provider-issued, media-specific evidence package. Request documented method, verification and exceptions separately.
Record it as an exception and identify the storage medium and policy-approved treatment. Do not certify a successful wipe without evidence simply because the system is inaccessible.
Yes, Microsoft says devices permanently leaving an organisation should be deregistered. Have the authorised IT administrator follow the current Intune and Autopilot process.
SP 800-88 Revision 2 is guidance for media sanitisation programs, not proof of a NIST-issued vendor certification. Ask providers for independently verifiable credentials and per-project evidence.
At minimum, plan an approved manifest, custody receipt, per-media treatment record, exception reconciliation and settlement record. Additional evidence depends on your organisation's policy and written supplier scope.
